Bird strike forces plane to make emergency landing

3:04 pm on 18 August 2010

Air New Zealand says bird strike is behind engine trouble on a passenger jet that led to a full emergency at Wellington Airport.

Emergency services were alerted at 1.15pm on Wednesday that one engine was shut down on the Boeing 737.

The plane had taken off for Auckland with 102 passengers, but was forced to turned back.

The Fire Service says nine fire engines from the Wellington region were sent to the scene after the pilot declared an emergency. The plane landed safely.

Air New Zealand says engineers are inspecting the plane and the passengers have been transferred to another flight.
