Council considers opening tunnel to out-of-service buses

4:34 pm on 18 August 2010

The Wellington City Council is considering opening an inner-city bus tunnel, in which a man was struck by car last year, to out-of-service buses.

The Mt Victoria Residents Association had raised concerns about the number of cars and people illegally using the bus tunnel at the end of Pirie Street.

All but three of the 97 submitters opposed allowing out-of-service buses to use it.

However, the council says there will not be a huge rise in bus traffic and is urging greater enforcement against illegal motorists and walkers.

The council will vote on the matter at a meeting on Thursday.
