Storm-hit dairy farmers forced to share generators

8:30 pm on 1 August 2008

Dairy farmers in Horowhenua have been forced to share generators after a storm knocked out power to the district on Wednesday morning.

Power company Electra says though electricity has been restored to most areas of Levin, up to 750 people are still without, particularly in rural areas of the Horewhenua district.

The Horowhenua District Council has warned it could be days before power is restored to some areas and is urging farmers who have problems with milk supply to call Fonterra.

Bruce Pedley says most of his 150 cows have just calved and are heavy in milk. He says the situation is a nightmare.

An emergency team from Fonterra has been sent to the district to work with farmers, power companies and the council to get milking going again.
