Northland log shipments up 25%

There's been a steep rise in log exports from Northland mainly due to an increase in sales to India and China.

Northport commercial manager Brett Amour says the volume of logs being loaded at Port Marsden is up 25%.

Exports of processed timber and wood chips have dropped sharply due to the recession, but log orders from China and India continued to grow as those countries invest in infrastructure to stimulate their economies.

Mr Armour says log ships are countering rising freight costs by taking on bigger loads at fewer ports.
