Auckland airport delays building second runway

Auckland International Airport has again delayed construction of its second runway.

It began earthworks to develop the new runway in late 2007 but suspended construction last year, when demand for air travel plummeted during the economic downturn.

Chief operating officer Tony Gollin says air travel is now picking up, but the airport believes the current runway can handle expected growth for another five years or so.

Mr Gollin says the $35 million runway will require another $12 million to complete, and, depending on the final design, it could be completed within a season.

The Board of Airline Representatives supports the decision.
