Rate rises for coastal Horowhenua residents

Large rate rises for some ratepayers in Horowhenua have been approved by the district's council.

Council chief executive David Ward says the council on Friday agreed to rate increases which will make its rating system fairer, given that coastal property owners have been paying relatively low rates.

Mr Ward says the council had proposed rate rises of more than 60% next year for some coastal residents.

But the council decided to change the system over ten years instead of five in order to soften the immediate impact on those people, making the average increase about $164.
