A team of police officers are escorting medical staff by foot to rescue a female tramper in the Kaweka Ranges in Hastings.
A spokesperson for the police says the group left on Sunday afternoon after a rescue helicopter was unable to reach Mackintosh Hut, where the tramper has taken shelter.
He says the tramper's condition is concerning but not life threatening.
The group is expected to return - with the tramper - by about 6pm on Sunday.
