Sixteen children and a driver have escaped serious injury following a school bus crash on the West Coast of the South Island.

Police say the Ritchies bus left the road and collided with a power pole on Blue Spur Road, near Hokitika, about 3.20pm on Monday.

Those inside the bus had to wait for emergency workers to remove the fallen power lines from the bus before evacuating.

Some of the primary and secondary school students suffered bruising, while an ambulance took the driver to Greymouth Hospital with a minor foot injury.

Police say the cause of the crash is not yet known and inquiries are continuing.
