Strategic plan to be draftred on beach erosion

Dunedin City Council will soon embark on drafting a strategic plan to combat ongoing erosion problems at the city's most popular stretch of swimming beaches.

The council declared a state of emergency two years ago after severe storms significantly eroded the dunes, and since then has had to replace more than 50,000 cubic metres of sand.

Community services manager Mick Reece says the council has collected a year's worth of data, including studies of tidal movements, weather patterns and topography.

The information will be used to draft a strategic plan to combat erosion, which could be ready for public consultation in about a year.
