A man who died after being dragged under a train in Auckland lost his balance and fell as he was getting off, according to police.

St John ambulance service says it received calls about 1.15pm on Wednesday that a man appearing to be in his 60s had become trapped beneath a carriage in the suburb of Newmarket.

St Johns Ambulance says when it arrived the man was already dead.

Police say they have been speaking with witnesses and it appears the man stumbled and fell on the tracks.

Police are working to determine his identity and contact next-of-kin.

Train operator Veolia says the Newmarket West section of the Western Line has been closed and commuters should expect delays.
