More expensive water feared under super-city

The Greater East Tamaki Business Association is worried that a merger of water companies under the planned Auckland super-city will mean more expensive water.

Retail water companies are merge with the wholesale company, Watercare, as part of the amalgamation of all the councils in Auckland.

The association is one of hundreds of individuals and businesses to make submissions to the Super City Select Committee.

Chair Elspeth Mount says it's had a good relationship with Manukau Water.

Ms Mount is worried that a new, much bigger company, will be out of touch with consumers and may not understand their needs. She says ultimately that could lead to much higher prices for water.

North Shore City Council is also wary of the merger, saying it fears the provision of water services will become too commercial.
