Residents return home after Christchurch shooting

6:16 am on 6 July 2009

Christchurch residents evacuated over a week ago after the police shot dead a gunman in their street were finally allowed home at the weekend.

Residents of Wadhurst Place were evacuated on 28 June when Shayne Sime opened fire, injuring a police officer and one of his neighbours, before he was killed.

Evidence of the siege is widespread, with bullet holes in houses, shattered windows boarded-up, and the most seriously damaged property cordoned off with safety tape.

Resident Barbara Hunton says it's a terrifying reminder to look out her window and see bullet holes in her neighbour's home.

Mrs Hunton says she and her husband were lucky as trees were in the gunman's line of fire.
