Witnesses sought after woman punched to ground

Police are appealing for information after an attack on a woman in the Wellington suburb of Kelburn.

The attack happened about 7.30am on Sunday after the woman stepped off a bus in Upland Road.

She then walked down St Michaels Crescent, where she was approached by a Maori or Polynesian man who punched her to the ground, demanding money.

Police say the man ran off down Hadfield Terrace when it became apparent the woman had none.

The woman needed medical treatment for moderate injuries.

Detective Sergeant Martin Todd says the woman saw a white van with a black stripe on its door race out of Hadfield Terrace within seconds of the attack.

He says police are investigating whether the sighting is related to the attack and want to hear from anyone who may have seen anything suspicious.
