A human jawbone was found on Waimairi Beach near Christchurch last Friday.
Police say the bone was discovered a metre from the high tide line and appeared to have been recently washed up.
Forensic work will be needed to identify where the bone has come from.
But police say dental records have already confirmed the remains did not belong to Tisha Lowry who went missing in Aranui last September.
