Coastline development vetoed

A development on a relatively untouched piece of Northland coastline has been vetoed by Rodney District Council.

The iwi-owned Te Arai Coastal Lands Trust has been trying for several years to change the District Plan to allow a housing and holiday development at Te Arai beach, south of Whangarei.

It wanted to build 850 homes, a boutique thermal spa, golf course, coastal park and campground.

But independent commissioners have ruled that the area, which is a nesting ground for rare bird species, is unique and that a development would ruin its special characteristics.
