Two teenage girls have been arrested following the knife-point robbery of a Wanganui dairy on Sunday.

The female owner of the Harper Street dairy was confronted at about 6pm by two people armed with knives, their faces covered.

One grabbed the store owner, while the other took tobacco from a shelf and tried to open the till.

They fled after the victim struggled with one of the offenders and managed to activate a panic alarm.

On Monday afternoon, police arrested two girls aged 16 and 13. The older girl has been charged with aggravated robbery and will appear in the Wanganui District Court on Tuesday. The younger girl has been referred to Youth Aid.
