Grand plans for Rotorua lakefront

6:22 am on 16 July 2009

Rotorua is about to be asked what it thinks of plans for a redevelopment of the lake waterfront.

Public consultation begins soon by the Rotorua District Council on a concept drawn up by the landscape architects responsible for the Wellington waterfront.

The first and most expensive stage involves building a 10-metre wide, 200-metre long promenade above the lake surface.

Parks and recreation manager Garry Page says replacing a small existing jetty is a top priority.

Some $12 million is needed for the first stage - of which $4 million will have to be raised through public-private partnerships.
