New patrol vessel arrives at Napier on maiden voyage

8:27 am on 17 July 2009

The first of the Navy's four new inshore patrol vessels, has completed its maiden voyage to its adopted city of Napier.

HMNZS Rotoiti was handed over to the Navy in April.

It will play a significant role in patrolling New Zealand's 15,000km of coastline and exclusive economic zone.

Napier Mayor Barbara Arnott launched HMNZS Rotoiti following its completion in Whangarei.

She says the ship's affiliation with Napier reflects a special relationship with the Navy, which began after the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake when the two cruisers were sent to provide assistance.

There will be a parade in Napier on Saturday to mark the ship's first visit.
