Work could start before Christmas on a $13 million roading project in Whangarei.
The New Zealand Transport Agency has announced the go-ahead for an extension to the Kamo bypass on State Highway 1.
The first stage of the bypass was completed in 2005, and the second phase will create a more direct route for traffic heading north or south through the city.
The Government has spent another $10 million over the years buying up houses in the path of the new road.
The agency says the project has been moved forward as part of the Government's recession spending package and will provide work for local contractors.
