Derailed carriage back on track

Kiwirail says it has 'rerailed' a carriage from a derailed train on a track north of Upper Hutt.

The company built a special road for a crane to get to the site where the Wellington to Masterton train partially derailed on Thursday evening.

A slip forced a locomotive and a carriage off the tracks but no one was injured.

Ruth Larsen from Kiwirail says engineers managed to get the carriage back on the track on Saturday afternoon and it was taken back to Wellington.

She says the locomotive is still at the site and the company hopes it will be back on the track by Saturday night.

All services between Wellington and Wairarapa have been replaced by buses but trains are expected to be back to normal on Monday.
