Police have named a teenager who was killed after being hit by a patrol car on State Highway One at Ohaeawai, about 70km north-west of Whangarei.

Rawire Wilson, 16, from Kaeo died at the scene, and another 16-year-old was injured.

A police statement says two officers were driving from Kaikohe to Moerewa on a routine patrol at about 11.40pm on Saturday, when two male pedestrians walking in the opposite direction, were hit.

The injured teenager was airlifted to Whangarei Hospital, with moderate injuries.

Northland area commander Mike Rusbatch says the road was very dark and both teenagers were wearing dark clothing.

It was a straight stretch of road and conditions were dry.

Mr Rusbatch says the two officers involved have not been stood down and will come back to work when they have recovered from the incident.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been advised and a criminal investigation has begun.
