Kaeo flood protection plan could be years away - council

5:01 pm on 26 July 2009

People hoping for some funds to lift or move their homes in Kaeo say they have had their hopes dashed again.

The Northland Regional Council has met with residents to update them on its flood protection plan for the Far North township.

But it's told them it could be years before the plan is realised and it's still negotiating to buy land to move the settlement.

Kaeo businesswoman Violet Walker says money promised by the Government to help residents can't be used until the plan's finished - and at this rate it never will be.

Ms Walker says it has been two years since the damaging flood, and people have become cynical about the council's ability to offer any practical response.
