Council warning to keep off landmark

1:21 pm on 31 July 2009

Subsidence around Christchurch's Shag Rock has prompted a warning from the city's council not to climb the landmark in case of rock falls.

The council says there is potenital for big rock falls and anyone climbing the rock at Sumner Beach could be in danger of being hurt.

Large sections of the vertical face on several sides of Shag Rock have subsided in the past fortnight and geotechnical investigations have found there is a high risk of more falls.

Signs have now been put up to warn people of the potential risks, and advising them to keep clear of the rock.
