Two clothing factories close on successive days

The Christchurch factory of clothing manufacturer Pacific Brands has closed its doors, the day after its Palmerston North factory did the same.

Just over 90 workers in the two Australian-owned factories have lost their jobs.

The factory's longest-serving worker, Ian Prestidge, an employee since 1965, says the closure marks the end of an era.

He told Radio New Zealand's Sophia Sinclair that many staff would take up the offer of retraining courses partly funded by a grant from Pacific Brands.

Company spokesperson Matthew Mahon has confirmed that 70% of the workforce from both factories have accepted a grant for that purpose.
