Missing man's body found in Lake Te Anau

9:54 pm on 1 August 2009

A police dive squad has recovered the body of a 22-year-old man who apparently drowned in Lake Te Anau early on Saturday morning.

He was Ricky Joseph Gregory from Cromwell.

The police say it appears three people took a dinghy about 3.30am and rowed out to a small sea plane moored near a jetty, but the dinghy overturned as they were returning.

A man and a woman swam to safety but Mr Gregory did not return.

After an extensive search of the lake, his body was found at 4.40pm on Saturday, about 20m from the float plane jetty.

The police said the three people were not wearing lifejackets and had been drinking.

They say alcohol appears to have contributed to Mr Gregory's death.

The two survivors were treated for shock.
