Hamilton Mayor Bob Simcock says he supports a local body amalgamation but is against the model proposed by a former mayor.
Margaret Evans's plan would see the nine separate Waikato councils, including Taupo district and the regional council, combined into one super-council.
Mr Simcock says Ms Evans's proposal forcing Taupo and Tokoroa to join districts closer to Hamilton goes against a clear legal requirement that there is a strong community of interest before any amalgamation.
He is, however, hoping some form of amalgamation in Waikato will happen before local body elections in 2013.
