Kaikohe squatters obtain stay of eviction

Squatters who have locked a Kaikohe businessman out of his building, have won a delay to their eviction.

The group is claiming sovereignty rights, but was told by the Kaikohe District Court last week it had no rights at all to the property and had to be out by Friday.

The squatters have since filed further action in the High Court and been granted a stay of the eviction notice, while a judge reviews their claims.

Glenn Hannah, who bought the commercial building in a mortgagee sale in April, says he's resigned to waiting, but finds the group's actions bizarre.

The squatters include a former owner of the building, who signed it over to the group in a bid to stop the mortgagee sale.
