Pair convicted over images of sex exploitation of children

7:43 pm on 4 August 2009

Two seamen on a cargo ship have been convicted in North Shore District Court over the importation of material showing sexual exploitation of children.

They pleaded guilty and were each fined $2000, plus court costs.

The pair were remanded in custody until the fines are paid and laptops and other equipment were forfeited.

Customs says the images in the computers involved extreme exploitation of very young children.

It says the result will send a clear message to seafarers that this type of material is not acceptable in New Zealand.
