Police say a skeleton found in a creek north of Auckland could be the body of a missing woman.
The remains were discovered by two children in Stanmore Bay on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula about 6pm on Wednesday.
Forensic staff have been examining the skeleton, which police say may have been there for some time. It will be removed from the creek, which is next to a sports field, on Thursday afternoon.
Detective Inspector Bruce Scott says while police are keeping an open mind, it could be the body of missing woman Alanah Brough, who disappeared in Whangaparaoa several months ago.
He says a formal identification of the body will take place on Friday morning.
