Charges laid over Palmerston North triple shooting

7:59 pm on 7 August 2009

A man has been charged after three people were shot in Palmerston North early on Friday morning in what is thought to be a gang-related incident.

A 33-year-old man and a woman aged 20, both from Palmerston North, were treated in hospital for moderate shotgun injuries and a 20-year-old Hastings woman was treated for minor shotgun pellet injuries. All have been discharged on Friday.

Police say the shooting is believed to have happened on a grassed area at the junction of Croyden Avenue and Farnham Avenue in the suburb of Highbury.

Officers were called to the house at 1.15am on Friday by neighbours who heard shooting and then shouting and screaming.

Rheon Albert, 27, appeared in Palmerston North District Court on Friday on three charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was remanded in custody to reappear in court next Wednesday.

Police have lifted a road cordon and hope to conclude scene examinations on Friday night.
