Cleanup begins after rockfall near Tauranga gorge

8:00 pm on 7 August 2009

Roading contractors are clearing a major rockfall which injured two women on Thursday.

The women's car was crushed when more than 200 cubic metres of boulders and mud fell on State Highway 36 in the Mangorewa Gorge near Tauranga.

The Transport Agency's national highways manager, Kaye Clark, says contractors on site spent Friday morning looking for loose or unstable material above the rockfall site.

Ms Clark says blasting was carried out to loosen any unstable areas before the major work began to remove the rubble.

State Highway 36 will be closed until at least Monday.
