Kawerau mill closure blamed on global newsprint glut

7:59 pm on 7 August 2009

The Norske Skog Tasman paper mill in Kawerau has shut down for 10 days from Friday, because of a global oversupply of newsprint.

Maintenance work will be taking place on the paper machines and a mechanical pulp mill during the next two weeks.

The company says it has worked closely with employees and unions to plan labour requirements during the downtime and has scheduled leave where possible.

Norske Skog Tasman says it is a challenging time for the newsprint industry globally, due to a drastic reduction in newsprint consumption.

The Engineering Printing and Manufacturing Union, which represents maintenance workers at the Bay of Plenty mill, says the company wants to restructure its workforce again.
