Protestors to meet Maori MPs over roadblock

9:50 pm on 10 August 2009

A protest group that is blocking a Bay of Plenty road between Murupara and Whakatane is expected to meet with MPs on Tuesday.

The police say the group used vehicles to block part of the 60 kilometre-long road near Murupara.

The demonstrators say they are protesting against being excluded from negotiations to settle outstanding historical Treaty of Waitangi claims.

Members of Ngati Haka/ Patuheuheu are expected to raise these concerns with Maori Party MPs Tariana Turia and Te Ururoa Flavell at Waiohau Marae.

The protest group says the roadblock is expected to continue into the week, but it could be called off depending on the outcome of the meeting.

Police cordons are in place at either end of the road to prevent the public from using the route.
