Supreme Court dismisses Sila appeal application

7:33 pm on 10 August 2009

The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal application by a Christchurch man convicted of murdering two teenagers when he drove into a crowd of partygoers.

Lipene Sila was found guilty of killing Jane Young and Hannah Rossiter on Edgeware Road in 2007.

He appealed his conviction and 17-year sentence on the basis that the trial judge should have allowed the jury to consider self-defence as a defence.

In June, the Court of Appeal released its decision, dismissing the bid. Now a Supreme Court judgement says the Appeal Court was correct in deciding that no jury could find the force was reasonable. And it says there is no appearance of any miscarriage of justice.
