More court security officers for capital's courts

Five more Court Security Officers are to be assigned to courts in Wellington.

The additional officers will be funded from an allocation in the 2009 Budget.

The Ministry of Justice is also in the process of employing more security officers in Kaikohe, Invercargill, Auckland, New Plymouth and Gisborne.

The funding will be rolled out over four years and there will be 17 new jobs in total this year.

In June, a man stabbed himself in the neck in the Wellington District Court after being sentenced on child pornography charges.

The ministry says the hiring of additional security officers was not prompted by that incident.

The new officers should be in place by November.
