A man has appeared in Wellington District Court charged with assaulting a man whose body was found in a halfway house on Tuesday.
The 37-year-old's body was discovered at the house in the suburb of Newtown but police will not say whether the dead man lived there.
Police say the house provides residential care facilities for people with mental illness and a caregiver was there when the man died.
The accused, 43, was granted interim name suppression and remanded in custody until Friday. Police say further charges may be laid.
Up to 20 people were at the home when the man died and are helping police with their inquiries.
Some members of the man's family attended a prayer ceremony at the Mansfield Street house on Tuesday.
