Police say one lane is now open on State Highway 29 - the main route between Matamata and Tauranga - and traffic is starting to move again.
Both lanes were closed after a car and truck collided in the lower Kaimai Ranges at 9.30am on Wednesday.
Police say diesel was flowing from the truck's fuel tank into a nearby river.
