A man has appeared in Papakura District Court accused of stabbing a South Auckland woman to death.

Leanne Kingston, 39, was discovered dead in her bathroom by one of her sisters on Monday after she did not pick up one of her four children from school.

Police have said she suffered a violent death.

The 43-year-old accused is the father of Ms Kingston's children.

He appeared in court on Thursday where he was granted name suppression and remanded in custody for a fortnight.

Outside court, his lawyer Tony Bouchier said his client is mortified about what has happened but will vigorously defend the charges against him.

Police say the man was bailed earlier this week after being charged with intentionally damaging the dead woman's car.
