Opposition to Whangarei mall plan

There have been strong objections to the possible sale of a sports ground in Whangarei, which could be turned into a shopping mall.

Whangarei District Council has been offered $20 million by developers for a six hectare block next to Okara Park.

The land is currently leased by Whangarei High School Old Boys Rugby Club, which the council says could be relocated when the lease expires next year.

A consortium headed by Hill Construction wants to turn the land into a large commercial site, which the council says would create jobs and new rates income.

But objectors say a new mall would hurt businesses in Whangarei's city centre and destroy a useful park.
