Phone line engineers go back to work

9:28 am on 13 August 2009

Telecom lines engineers have returned to work after two days of strikes over new employment terms but say some services will still be disrupted.

The Engineering Printing and Manufacturing Union says up to 1000 engineers took part in the strike because Telecom's new subcontractor wants the workers to set themselves up as independent contractors.

Union spokesperson Joe Gallagher says workers are not ruling out more strikes and will still be taking other forms of industrial action.

Telecom's network infrastructure arm, Chorus, says some customers in Auckland and Northland may face delays in getting broadband installed but union members make up only a third of the workforce.
