Questions over lack of progress on Hastings retail centre

8:03 am on 14 August 2009

Residents in Hastings are seeking answers about a lack of progress by an Australian property developer turning the city's former major sports facility into a retail centre.

There's no sign of any construction work nearly two years after Charter Hall bought the 4.5 hectare Nelson Park for about $19 million.

The council removed the grandstand and grassed embankment following the sale in 2007.

Former marathon runner and All Black, Brian Steele, an original member of an action group which opposed the sale of Nelson Park, says the state of the park is a disgrace.

Charter Hall's New Zealand general manager Neil Berryman won't comment on the proposed $75 million development.
