The historic Skippers Road near Queenstown has been closed for urgent repairs.
The unsealed, single-lane road through Skippers Canyon is damaged in the same area - about a kilometre from the Coronet Peak turnoff -affected by a slip two years ago.
Queenstown Lakes District Council roading manager Ian Marshall says there are some very narrow sections that need serious attention.
Mr Marshall says the gap between the outside wheels of a vehicle and the edge of the road in some parts is only 250mm.
The roadwork is expected to take about six weeks.
