Police have called off a search for a boy missing in the Wairoa River in northern Hawke's Bay.
A spokesperson says the boy, aged 12 or 13, was last seen going into the river to retrieve a ball about 5.30pm on Tuesday, but did not surface.
Police, volunteers and a rescue helicopter using night vision goggles searched the area but could not find him.
The search will resume on Wednesday at first light.
