Council generally supports $450m airport makeover

Wellington City Council has generally supported a $450 million makeover plan for the capital's airport.

The plan includes expanding the terminal to handle up to 10 million travellers, a multi-storey car park and improvements and extensions to the runway.

The plan is based on an expected doubling of passenger numbers and a five-fold increase in freight by 2030.

But some councillors say the plan is fundamentally flawed and does not take into account broad economic and social trends.

Councillor Brian Pepperell says there are issues such as the depletion of world oil stocks to be aware of.

However, Mayor Kerry Prendergast believes an expanded airport is vital for the city.

In its submission, the council has made it clear that any runway extensions should be necessary and justified.

The public has until the end of August to make submissions.
