Repeat drink drivers among 200 to face charges

The number of people repeatedly found drink driving and who obviously have a problem with alcohol is worrying, say Counties Manukau police.

At eight checkpoints on Friday and Saturday night, 9,540 cars were stopped and 205 people will face drink driving charges.

Road policing manager Inspector Heather Wells says one driver who was found to be over the limit - and who had already had his licence suspended - drove through the same checkpoint just one hour later.

Inspector Wells says another driver, who was almost three times over the limit, had eight previous convictions. One man was caught for the third time in just seven months.

Ms Wells says the number of people who obviously have a problem with alcohol is worrying and suggests a major attitude change is needed in the district.
