Phone, internet restored to hundreds in Far North

Telephone, internet and mobile services have been restored to Northland after a cable was cut near Kaeo on Monday morning.

Telecom's infrastructure arm, Chorus, says industrial action involving hundreds of union workers on Monday had no impact on the company's response to the fault.

Chorus says about 1000 landline customers and 2500 broadband customers from Kaeo to Kaitaia were affected by the outage. Some mobile coverage was also reduced.

Spokesperson Robin Kelly says another company excavating in the area cut a cable line causing the fault, and the incident was not related to the industrial action.

Up to 1000 telecommunications workers from throughout New Zealand went on strike on Monday over plans to force them to become owner-operators.
