Pedestrians should walk towards traffic - coroner

8:03 pm on 29 August 2009

A coroner who investigated the deaths of two men has advised that pedestrians should walk towards oncoming traffic.

Guy Bach, 58, and Stephen Kailahi, 21, both died when Mr Bach's truck hit Mr Kailahi as he was walking home to Bulls along State Highway 1.

Palmerston North coroner Tim Scott has found that Mr Bach rolled the truck while trying to avoid Mr Kailahi, and both men were killed.

In his findings, Mr Scott says that when walking along a road without a footpath, pedestrians should always use the right-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic.

He also recommends that hitchhikers should not walk while trying to thumb a lift.
