Storm aftermath disrupts Wellington region trains, traffic

1:40 pm on 31 August 2009

Landslips, flooding and high river levels have caused rail and traffic delays in the Wellington region.

A slip on rail tracks following stormy overnight weather blocked one of the tracks on the rail line between Pukerua Bay and Plimmerton on Monday morning. Some passengers completed their journies by bus.

A KiwiRail spokesperson said train services had returned to normal by midday.

In the Hutt Valley, part of Harcourt Werry Dr was closed on Monday morning due to flooding and Block Rd near Melling Railway Station was closed because of the high water level in the Hutt River.

Most roads remained open, however, though motorists were warned to take care on parts of State Highway 1 and State Highway 2 in and around Wellington.

Caution was urged on the road between Johnsonville and Ngauranga Gorge, Paekakariki and Paraparaumu, and at Pukerua Bay where there's been a slip near Wharetapu Cemetery.

The storm brought down slips on parts of the Rimutaka Hill Road, at Haywards Hill, and between Upper Hutt and The Plateau on State Highway 2.

Adding to delays, a nose-to-tail car crash in the southbound lane of SH2 near Belmont at about 8am caused traffic backlogs for a time.
