A Christchurch man who hit a tree during a charity motorcycle event at the weekend has died.

Ian Gillon, 46, was taking part in an off-road endurance trail ride on Selwyn Plantation Board land near Darfield when the accident occurred, police said.

Mr Gillon died at Christchurch Hospital on Wednesday morning.

Police say children and adults were taking part in the fundraising ride on a set course through the forest.

Adventure Trail Rides, the company believed to have organised the event, declined to comment.

The death has been referred to the coroner.
