There's been a stoush over marae funding at Manukau City Council which Mayor Len Brown says shows the challenges the Auckland super-city council will face with Maori representation.
An attempt to change the rules to allow the council's Treaty of Waitangi Committee to allocate a $145,000 budget for marae development failed to attract the necessary support from 75%of councillors.
Mr Brown told Waatea News that some councillors opposed the change because the committee included some members appointed through a process of iwi consultation.
He said this gives some idea of the challenge facing the new council if the Government does not make a decision on Maori seats.
Mr Brown announced on Sunday he would run for the Auckland mayoralty next year.
